Build Your Own Classic Valve Amp

Build Your Own Classic Valve Amp

People have been building their own valve amps for many years. A few years ago Mojo set up in business in the USA to allow enthusiasts to recreate the classic valve (tubes as our American cousins say) amps of the 50s and 60s. Today they supply many well-known boutique amp builders who started as enthusiastic amateurs. Now Mojo kits are available in the UK.

The first amp building course was held at Dickinson Amplification in Crystal Palace in late September 2008. We all wanted to build a Princeton Reverb and the key learning point from the course was that 2 days really isn't long enough to build one of these amps. It was hugely enjoyable and educational but very pressed for time which is why we specify either a Champ or a Tweed DeLuxe for the course.

Here is the intrepid band of amp builders on the course with their proud creations surrounding an original '64 Princeton Reverb.

The Guitar Parts Shop Princeton Reverb Clone

The Guitar Parts Shop Princeton Reverb Clone

The fit and finish of Mojo kits are first class and you also have the option to specify variations in materials and components. The Guitar Parts Shop Princeton Reverb clone was specified with brown crocodile skin finish tolex covering, a wheat colour grill cloth and a 12" baffle instead of the stock 10" baffle. The amp was fitted with a Jensen P12Q reissue alnico speaker rather than the Jensen C10N ceramic speaker the amp would originally have been fitted with. It's very much a matter of individual taste but sonically and cosmetically the results were amazing.
